Campbell
PTA Meeting Notes

October 14, 2014

6:00 p.m. – 7:40 p.m.

 Attendees:  Approximately 30 individuals

I.    Welcome
and Announcements

PTA President, Beth Cavey, welcomed everyone.

  • There is no PTA meeting in November due to the regularly scheduled meeting date falling on
    Veterans’ Day.
  •  In response to suggestions made in last year’s PTA survey to try different meeting times, the meeting on Tuesday, December 9th will start at 8 p.m.

The PTA islooking for help translating PTA meeting minutes and other PTA documents into Spanish.  If you are interested in helping, please contact Amy Yenyo at secretary@campbellschool.org.

  • The school dance is scheduled for Friday, November 21st in the gym (enter by the
gym).  It will be a beach party theme.  A local DJ has been hired.  It is going to be a great
    night.
  • Holiday Drive.  Campbell is collecting items, such as new toys, giftcards, or clothing, to help support Campbell families in need during the holidays.  If you are interested in donating or have questions, please contact the staff in the front office.
  • Zumba classes are at Campbell on Thursday nights at 7:45 p.m.  Campbell gets a percentage of the class fees.  The school recently got a check for $600.

 II.   PTA
Resolution Regarding Harris Teeter

    • Harris Teeter is the official grocery store of the NFL Washington Football team.  The team name and mascot are considered racist by many.
  • In recognition of Campbell’s philosophy of promoting respect and diversity, the PTA passed a resolution (a copy of which is attached) to not accept any money from Harris Teeter until it is no longer the official store of the Washington Redskins.
  • The Harris Teeter logo and link on Campbell’s website has been removed.  In addition, the PTA will be sending a letter to Harris Teeter explaining its action.

III.  Fundraising
Plans, Funding Requests, Budget Update

Fundraising PlansThe following fundraising activities are underway.  For more
information go to
https://campbellschool.org/
.

    • Pledge Drive:  A pledge drive will be the PTA’s first fundraising project.  The budget goal is to raise $3,000.  Pledge Drive funds will be used for
enrichment programs, teacher support, the Outdoor Classroom, and to
support classroom libraries.  To donate online, go to www.campbellschool.org.  More information on the Pledge Drive will be sent in Thursday folders.
It will be promoted through a number of avenues, including the
Campbell listserve, Facebook page, and the website.  We need help getting the word out.  For questions on the Pledge Drive, please contact Rachel Schroeder at vicepresident2@campbellschool.org.

  • Restaurant Nights.  This is an easy way to raise money for Campbell.  On restaurant nights, a certain percentage of the restaurant’s revenue is given to Campbell.
    • Ireland’s Four Courts on November 11th from 5-8 p.m.:  A Campbell parent, Dave Cahill, runs this restaurant and has graciously offered to give 20% of the proceeds
that night to Campbell.  Kids eat free.  Donation boxes will be available.
  • Silver Diner in Clarendon December 4th from 5-8 p.m.:   Silver Diner is another family friendly restaurant with great food.  Campbell’s restaurant night is from 5-8 p.m. on December 4th.  We need 8-10 folks to help out that night with greeting and bringing drinks to the tables (Principal Nesselrode will be there so come on out!).  In addition, Silver Diner has a program called “Eat Well Do Well.”If you sign up for this program, you get a card.  Every time you eat there and show your card,5% of the check goes to Campbell.  If 80people sign up, Campbell will get a $250 bonus. The school can also qualify for additional incentives, so be sure to sign up.  If you have already signed up for the Eat Well Do Well Program, be sure to link your card to Campbell (go to silverdiner.com, select Arlington and then Campbell). Please contact Nathan Zee at npzee@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering at the Silver Diner Restaurant Night or have questions regarding the Eat Well Do Well Program.
  • Restaurant nights next year:  Labenese Taverna in Pentagon Row on January 27th; Dogfish Head (near the Home Depot) tentatively scheduled for March 24th.

Boxtops! Be sure to cut out your boxtops and hold onto them for now.  The PTA will be collecting them.  Look out for details in your Thursday folder.  For more information about boxtops for education, go to http://www.boxtops4education.com/all-about-boxtops.

  • Store links.  Another easy way to raise money is to link store cards to Campbell.  For example, Target’s Redcard gives 5% of the amount of your purchases to your selected school.  If you shop on Amazon (through the Campbellschool.org link), 5% of the amount of your purchases will go to the school.  There are other cards that also link to schools including Safeway and Giant.  For more information, go to https://campbellschool.org/support-campbell/ or contact Rachel Schroeder at vicepresident2@campbellschool.org.
  • Barnes & Noble, Black Friday Wrapping on November 28th: We need volunteers to help wrap presents at Barnes & Noble (on Route 50) on Black Friday – the day
after Thanksgiving.  Donations are accepted for wrapping.  This is a great way to reach individuals outside of the Campbell community.   If you are able to volunteer, please
    contact vicepresident2@campbellschool.org.
  • Day camps.  This month’s conference day camps netted $318 for Campbell.

Funding Requests.

Motion to fund $720 for a fieldtrip to the Smithsonian

    • Discovery Theater for all K-1 classes was approved.  This will be the big field trip for all the K-1 classes.  The funds will cover theater tickets (those not donated by the theater) to Coyote Mischief Tales for the kids and chaperones.  The field trip will also include a visit to the Washington Monument.
  • The PTA is getting requests for items to support comfortable reading areas to support our new Classroom Libraries.  Rather than look at these items piecemeal, the PTA would like to have an idea of what teachers are looking for in their individual classrooms and decide on funding support all at once.  These items could be bean bags, chairs, book bags etc.
Teachers are asked to email their requests to president@campbellschool.org
or treasurer@campbellschool.org  by November 15th.  The funding requests will be reviewed at the December PTA meeting.
